Battle is a historic town in every sense, and its housing shows it. The High Street runs from the Abbey gatehouse past timber framed, Georgian and Victorian frontages, most of them listed and all of them in the conservation area, and the roads behind it mix older cottages with twentieth century housing on the edges of the town.
O&S takes on renovations, extensions, conversions, kitchens and bathrooms across Battle and the villages around it. We are a family run firm based in Polegate, with our own electricians on the team, and we are used to working on buildings that need a careful hand.
In the town centre the work is mostly repair, renovation and sympathetic alteration. Timber frames, lime plaster, old brick and tile hanging all need to be worked with rather than against, and the electrics and plumbing in these houses are often the last things anybody touched, sometimes decades ago. A full refurbishment that sorts the services properly, while leaving the building looking like itself, is what most of them need.
Beyond the conservation area, Battle has interwar and postwar housing where extensions and loft conversions are straightforward, and a ring of villages, Netherfield, Whatlington, Catsfield, Sedlescombe, Ninfield and Crowhurst among them, where the stock runs from period cottages to 1960s bungalows on generous plots.
The countryside around the town also has its share of redundant farm buildings, and barn conversions are a particular part of what we do here, working with your architect and Rother's planners on what a building can become.

Battle town centre is a conservation area with a high concentration of listed buildings, administered by Rother District Council. Listed building consent is needed for most alterations to a listed house, inside as well as out, and we work with your architect or the conservation officer to agree what can change before any work starts. Outside the conservation area, permitted development usually applies to rear extensions and loft conversions, subject to the normal limits, and building regulations cover the rest.
Renovation of older houses is the core of our Battle work: cottages and town houses that need the roof, the timbers, the plaster and the services brought back into good order without losing the character that made somebody buy them. It is careful, patient work and it suits the way we like to build.
Out in the villages we are asked for extensions and loft conversions on the twentieth century housing, barn conversions on the farms, and the kitchens, bathrooms and driveways that follow. A fair amount of it starts with a conversation about what the planners will and will not allow.
We work with your architect and the conservation officer, and match materials so the repair belongs.
