The difference between a driveway that still looks right after ten winters and one that has sunk, cracked and grown weeds is almost entirely below the surface. The excavation, the sub base, the compaction, the edging and the drainage decide how the top layer behaves, and they are the parts that get skipped when a driveway is cheap.
O&S lays new driveways, paths and patios across Eastbourne, Hailsham, Hastings and the surrounding towns. We do the groundworks ourselves, so the base is built to suit the ground rather than to a standard depth, and we plan the drainage so the water goes where it should rather than towards the house.
Block paving, natural stone, porcelain and resin bound surfaces are all available, and we will tell you honestly which suits your ground and your budget.
Pick a surface to see it laid, and the layers that sit underneath it. The base is what decides whether a drive stays flat.
Hard wearing and easy to lift and relay. Laid in herringbone so the blocks lock together under a car.
Water runs off to a channel or a soakaway unless permeable blocks are used.
A smooth finish with no joints, no loose stones and no weeds coming through.
Permeable, so rain soaks straight through and planning permission is not normally needed.
Natural riven stone in warm, varied colours. Best on patios and paths, or a drive built for it.
Laid to a fall so water runs to the garden or a drain.
Large crisp slabs that resist stains and fading, and suit a contemporary house.
Laid to a fall on a full bed, with the joints sealed.
The parts of the work we handle ourselves, which on most jobs is all of it.
Dug out to the right depth for the ground, with a compacted sub base that will not settle.
Channel drains, soakaways and falls planned so surface water clears the house and the road.
Concrete or clay blocks in the pattern and colour you want, with proper edge restraints.
Indian sandstone, limestone and porcelain patios, laid on a full bed and pointed properly.
A smooth, permeable surface with no loose stone, on a suitable base.
Retaining walls, brick edging, steps and the finishing that ties it to the house.
The same four steps on every job, so you always know what happens next.
We check the ground, the levels and where the water goes now.
One price for the groundworks, the drainage and the surface.
Excavation, base, edging, drainage and the surface, laid and compacted properly.
Cleaned, jointed and ready to use, and covered by our 12 month guarantee.
“Nobody admires a sub base. Everybody notices when there is not one.”

Not for most driveways, as long as the surface is permeable or the water drains to a lawn or soakaway rather than the road. We design the drainage to meet that as standard.
It depends on the ground, the look you want and the budget. Block paving is hard wearing and easy to repair, natural stone and porcelain suit patios, and resin gives a smooth surface with no loose stone. We will talk you through it at the visit.
Yes. Patios, paths, steps and garden walls are all part of what we do, and it is cheaper to do them in one visit than two.
Most domestic driveways are a matter of days once the materials are on site. Larger drives with retaining walls or drainage work take longer, and we tell you the programme before we start.
Not if the surface is permeable, or if the rainwater drains to a lawn or a soakaway within your own boundary. Most of our driveways are designed that way. If yours cannot be, we will tell you and handle the application.
A typical driveway is dug out, based and laid within a week, with a day or two more for edging, walls and making good. Larger areas take longer and we give you a programme before we start.
Most projects turn into two or three of these at once, and one team doing all of them is the whole point. Every service
Site clearance, bulk excavation, footings and drainage, so what goes on top has something to sit on.
Brickwork, blockwork, roofing, carpentry and the general building jobs that do not fit a neat label.
Single and double storey extensions, from the footings and the steel through to the last coat of paint.
