Ringmer is a large village a couple of miles east of Lewes, big enough to have its own estates and shops, close enough to the town to share its planning sensitivities on the older properties. It is a comfortable drive from our base in Polegate along the A27 and the B2192, and one we make often.
O&S carries out extensions, loft and garage conversions, kitchens, bathrooms and renovations across Ringmer and the surrounding villages. We are family run, with more than three decades of combined experience, and our own electricians handle the wiring on every job.
Around the green and the church, Ringmer has its older houses: flint and brick cottages, some timber framed, a few of them listed. These are renovation and sympathetic extension jobs, where the services are usually overdue and the work has to respect the building.
The bulk of the village, though, was built from the 1960s onwards, in a series of estates that give Ringmer more homes than most Sussex villages. Those semis, detached houses and bungalows are exactly the stock that suits a rear extension, a loft conversion or a garage conversion, and their kitchens and bathrooms are often ready for a proper refurbishment rather than another quick fix.
Outside the village, the lanes towards Glynde, Laughton and Isfield have farmhouses, cottages and the occasional redundant barn, and the jobs there range from full refurbishments to conversions.
The village has grown in stages, and the estates from different decades want different things. The 1960s houses often need their original windows, roofs and wiring looked at as part of any extension, while the 1980s and 1990s homes are more often about a bigger kitchen or a converted garage than about repair.
Straightforward extensions and conversions on the estates, careful work on the older village houses. Every service
Single and double storey extensions, from the footings and the steel through to the last coat of paint.
Unused roof space turned into a proper bedroom, office or bathroom, with the stairs and the insulation done right.

Walls out, floors levelled, units fitted, and everything plumbed and wired by our own team.
Tired or run down properties taken back and brought forward, room by room or all in one go.
Rewires, lighting and renewable energy installations, carried out by our own qualified electricians.
Ringmer falls under Lewes District Council, and part of the village sits within the South Downs National Park boundary, which brings the National Park Authority into planning for some properties. On the estates, permitted development usually covers a rear extension or a loft conversion and building regulations does the rest. Nearer the green, and inside the National Park, a planning application is more likely. We check which applies to your address before we quote.
The estate houses that make up most of Ringmer are ideal for rear extensions and loft conversions, and those are the jobs we are asked for most. Garage conversions follow close behind, along with kitchens and bathrooms in houses that were last refitted in the 1980s.
Around the green and out in the lanes towards Glynde and Laughton the work is different: renovations of flint and brick cottages, rewires, and the occasional barn or outbuilding conversion, with the planners and sometimes the National Park involved.
